MOUNT HOREB School Shooting: Police Respond to Armed Student Outside Middle School

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. — Authorities responded to a concerning situation at Mount Horeb Middle School, where a student was reported to have a weapon near the premises. This prompted the school to go into lockdown, with some students remaining in their classrooms while others were evacuated for safety measures.

Upon arrival, Mount Horeb police confronted the student with the weapon, leading to a fatal encounter outside the school grounds. The individual involved was a minor student within the school district, reportedly only 14 years old. Thankfully, the student did not gain access to the school building and was neutralized by law enforcement outside without causing harm to others.

Attorney General Josh Kaul expressed the gravity of the situation, acknowledging the distress it could cause any parent. Despite the incident, officials reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat to public safety, although investigations are ongoing. As part of standard procedure, officers involved in the incident have been placed on leave while wearing body cameras during the altercation.

Families of the students were gradually reunited Wednesday evening, following the harrowing events earlier in the day. Grateful for the safety of all children, parents like Ali Peterson commended the school district for preventing a potentially disastrous outcome. The collective relief was palpable as families embraced their loved ones after the day’s events.

In light of the incident, School District Superintendent Dr. Steve Salerno announced the cancellation of classes for the following day, with a focus on providing support for the school community. Plans are in place to resume classes on Friday, as the community works through the aftermath of this emotionally charged event. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement, school officials, and families underscore the resilience and unity of the Mount Horeb community in the face of adversity.
