Mother, Young Son Killed in Southwest Atlanta House Fire

Investigators are working to determine what sparked the Waters Road blaze that also left two people with minor injuries.

ATLANTA — A woman and her young son died after a fire swept through a southwest Atlanta home Wednesday night, trapping them inside as flames rapidly overtook the residence, according to Atlanta Fire Rescue officials.

Firefighters were called to Waters Road around 8:45 p.m. Oct. 7 after reports that people were trapped in the burning home. Crews arrived in less than five minutes and encountered heavy fire coming from multiple sides of the house. A man and another boy had made it outside, but the woman and a second child remained trapped.

Firefighters entered the home and searched for the missing occupants despite the intense conditions. The woman and boy were later found inside and did not survive. FOX 5 Atlanta reported Thursday that the child was 4 years old. Officials had not publicly released the victims’ names as of Friday.

The man and the woman had initially tried to put out the fire before the emergency call, fire officials said. The man went outside to get water, and another boy also escaped. By the time they tried to return, flames had spread too far for them to get back inside. The man was treated for smoke inhalation, while the surviving boy suffered minor injuries.

Officials said preliminary information placed the fire’s apparent starting area near a couch. Atlanta Fire Rescue officials cautioned that the precise cause had not been established. The account that the fire began near the couch came from someone who had been inside the home and remained separate from the department’s formal investigation.

Chief Andrew Anderson, a public information officer for Atlanta Fire Rescue, said responding crews faced a deeply difficult scene after arriving quickly and learning that two people were still inside. Firefighters entered the burning structure and carried out searches while crews worked to control flames that had already spread through much of the home.

The deaths left investigators with several unanswered questions, including what ignited the fire and how quickly it spread before the 911 call. Authorities also had not publicly confirmed whether working smoke alarms were present inside the residence. Fire investigators continued examining the scene after the flames were extinguished.

The investigation into the cause remained open Friday. Officials had not announced any finding of criminal activity or released additional information about the identities of the woman and child who died.
