Mother, Teenage Son Killed In Harris County Home

Deputies are investigating after two people were found shot in the Riverstone Ranch subdivision.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A mother and her 17-year-old son died Tuesday after they were found shot inside a southeast Harris County home, where investigators spent the day processing evidence and interviewing neighbors.

The deaths have shaken the Riverstone Ranch subdivision near Pearland, a quiet area where neighbors said the family had lived for years. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has not released the victims’ names. Authorities said an adult daughter was also inside the home and was not injured.

Deputies responded shortly after 6:30 a.m. to the 9400 block of Windy Spring Lane. The teenage boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His mother was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Santiago Telavara, who said he knew the teen, said he had seen him the day before. “When I found out it was my friend, I’d just been sitting there contemplating and processing,” Telavara said.

Investigators have released few details about what happened before the shooting. Several neighbors told reporters they saw a man walking through the area around the time of the incident. That person was taken in for questioning, but law enforcement sources cautioned that investigators had not connected him to the deaths. Officials also said they had no clear answers early in the case.

Crime scene investigators and homicide detectives worked at the home for much of Tuesday. Authorities were reviewing the sequence of emergency calls, the condition of the home and witness statements from people in the neighborhood. Officials said the mother had a gunshot wound to the face area. They did not release more details about the son’s injuries or say whether a weapon had been recovered.

Law enforcement sources said investigators were considering murder-suicide as one possible explanation, but the sheriff’s office had not announced a final finding. No charges had been filed, and no suspect had been publicly named. The medical examiner’s office was expected to confirm the victims’ identities and causes and manners of death after family notifications and autopsies.

Neighbors described the street as family-oriented and calm. James McLaughlin, a longtime homeowner, said the area is known for families, churchgoers and quiet mornings. Telavara said the teen was often outside with friends and relatives. “It’s going to be weird not seeing him there all the time,” he said.

The case remained open Wednesday as investigators worked to determine who fired the shots, when they were fired and what led to the deaths.
