DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. — Neighbors are mourning a 46-year-old woman who was shot and killed inside her Dearborn Heights home Tuesday morning, recalling a woman devoted to her family as police investigate what they say appears to have been an isolated domestic violence incident.
Police responded shortly after 10 a.m. Aug. 25 to a home in the 5400 block of Huron Street after receiving a report of a dispute involving the woman and a 35-year-old man who knew her. Officers forced their way inside and found the woman with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead despite efforts to save her, according to police. The man was found with what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The woman’s name had not been publicly released as of Wednesday. Police also had not confirmed the precise relationship between her and the injured man. Investigators said the episode appeared to be domestic in nature and that they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public. The circumstances leading to the shooting remained under investigation.
For people who lived near the Huron Street home, the shooting abruptly turned a familiar neighborhood into an active crime scene. Neighbors described the woman as warm and family-oriented. They recalled seeing her with her children and grandchildren and said family gatherings were a regular part of life at the home. Their memories focused less on the police activity that followed the shooting than on the family they had watched grow around them.
Neighbor Jim Fracassi told reporters that one of the woman’s children sought help shortly before the shooting. Fracassi said he started toward the home because he hoped he could help calm the situation, then heard the woman screaming and a gunshot. Police separately confirmed that one of the woman’s minor sons called 911.
Fracassi said three of the woman’s children were at the home during the disturbance. He said one son was cut while getting out of the house before the shooting. Authorities did not immediately provide additional information about the child’s injuries. The account offered a glimpse of how quickly the dispute unfolded before officers arrived.
Fracassi also told reporters that he believed the injured man was the woman’s former boyfriend and said there had been problems involving him before Tuesday. He said the woman had previously asked him to contact police if he saw the man at her home and said she had a personal protection order against him. Police had not independently confirmed those details or publicly confirmed the nature of the relationship, leaving them as the neighbor’s account rather than established findings in the investigation.
As investigators worked at the house, neighbors spoke about the woman primarily as a mother and grandmother whose home often centered on family. Fracassi described her as a caring mother and said his concern after the shooting was for the children she left behind. Other neighbors similarly remembered gatherings and celebrations involving her grandchildren.
Police Chief Mike Guzowski expressed condolences to the woman’s family and said officers responded quickly and tried to save her life. He said the investigation remains active. Authorities have not publicly announced criminal charges, and the 35-year-old man’s condition left unanswered what legal steps, if any, could follow as detectives continue reviewing the shooting.
Dearborn Heights police were continuing to investigate Wednesday. Officials had not released the woman’s identity, a confirmed relationship between the two people or further details about what led to the dispute.
