Mother and Son Murder-Suicide in Uintah County Under Investigation

VERNAL, Utah – Police in Uintah County are currently investigating a tragic incident involving the deaths of a mother and son, which they believe to be a murder-suicide.

According to newly released court documents, authorities suspect that 42-year-old Mark Ryan Bingham shot and killed his mother in Naples before returning to Vernal. Upon his return, he set his house on fire, leading to his tragic death by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation began on December 31 when authorities responded to a fire near 390 West 250 South in Vernal. During their response, they discovered a body in the bathroom, later identified as Mark Bingham. The cause of his death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The investigation also uncovered evidence of an accelerant being poured throughout the house, indicating arson.

Tragically, following the fire, authorities received news of the death of Bingham’s mother, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head. The discovery of shell casings at Bingham’s residence linked the two incidents together, leading to the belief of a murder-suicide.

Further insight into the tragic events came from a “delayed text” allegedly sent from Bingham’s phone, indicating his intentions to a group chat nearly 30 minutes after his mother’s death. The police are actively investigating this text and collecting evidence from multiple devices in hopes of understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In light of these distressing events, it is essential to provide resources for those struggling with thoughts of suicide. Anyone in need of help can reach out to the suicide prevention hotline at 988 or visit the National Alliance on Mental Illness Utah website for support.

As the investigation continues, authorities are diligently working to uncover any potential motives or additional suspects connected to this tragic incident.
