The motorist found the 16-year-old stumbling near Colquitt Street and drove him to a hospital, Houston police said.
HOUSTON, Texas — A passing driver took a critically injured 16-year-old to a hospital after finding him stumbling near the site of a shooting in Houston’s Montrose area late Monday, police said.
The teenager was later transferred to a higher-level trauma center because of the seriousness of his injuries. His condition prevented investigators from interviewing him, leaving police without his account of the shooting or a description of anyone who may have been involved.
Houston police responded at about 9:30 p.m. Monday to the 700 block of Colquitt Street, near Stanford Street, after receiving reports of gunfire. Officers found numerous shell casings across the area but did not initially locate an injured person.
While officers were processing the scene, they learned that a teenage shooting victim had arrived at a nearby hospital in a private vehicle. Police said the driver had been traveling through the area when the motorist noticed the teen stumbling along the road and stopped to check on him.
The driver realized that the teenager had been shot and took him to the hospital, police said. Authorities described the motorist as a good Samaritan. Police did not release the driver’s name or provide further details about where the teen was found in relation to the main shooting scene.
Investigators also found a vehicle with numerous bullet holes and narcotics that appeared to have been thrown into nearby bushes or grass. Several vehicles in the area had been struck by gunfire, according to reports based on information from police.
The number and placement of the shell casings led investigators to consider whether gunfire had been exchanged between two people or groups. Police had not determined who fired the shots, whether the wounded teen had been inside a vehicle or what led to the confrontation.
No suspect description had been released Tuesday. Police also had not announced an arrest or identified other injured people connected to the shooting.
Investigators were continuing to review the physical evidence while waiting for the teenager’s condition to improve enough for a possible interview. The shooting remained under investigation.
