LOS ANGELES (AP) – Thirteen individuals associated with the Mexican Mafia prison gang are facing charges for their involvement in a narcotic smuggling operation and violent assault at the Los Angeles County jail system. Five of the suspects have been arrested, while two remain at large.
According to authorities, the investigation began in February of 2022 after reports emerged of narcotics being smuggled into the Los Angeles County Jail, as well as a violent attack on an inmate within the facility. The operation was allegedly orchestrated by high-ranking Mexican Mafia associates outside of the jail under the direction of a member in state prison.
The suspects who have been apprehended include Estela Guerrero, Daniel Arochi-Gonzalez, and Rosa Christina Martinez, among others. Arrest warrants have been issued for Marco Lujan and Ariel Pereyra, who are currently at large. Several additional suspects were already incarcerated on unrelated charges.
Authorities revealed that a Mexican Mafia “facilitator” was responsible for relaying orders to associates within the jail, known as “Sureños” or “soldiers,” to carry out an assault on an individual who falsely claimed to be a member of the criminal organization. The victim sustained injuries from the attack and was treated at a nearby hospital.
During the investigation, law enforcement officials seized over 30 grams of heroin from the jail premises and discovered approximately 10 ounces of methamphetamine, a firearm, and thousands of dollars in cash at a suspect’s residence. The narcotics were allegedly being distributed within the jail system for the profit of the Mexican Mafia.
Deputy-In-Charge Lou Avila and Deputy District Attorney Abbigail Briones from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office’s Prison Crimes Unit are handling the prosecution of the case. Authorities have released photos of the fugitives, Marco Lujan and Ariel Pereyra, urging anyone with information on their whereabouts to contact the FBI or local law enforcement.
The case underscores the ongoing challenges of combating organized crime within correctional facilities, where gang members continue to operate and orchestrate criminal activities despite strict security measures. The charges against the Mexican Mafia members serve as a reminder of the persistent efforts required to maintain order and safety within the prison system.
