Detroit, Michigan – A Detroit teenager, Demitrus Tiwan Shaw, is set to face a preliminary exam for multiple felony charges related to a mass shooting at a block party that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to 19 others, including two individuals from Oakland County. Shaw, 19, is currently held in the Wayne County Jail with a $1 million bond following the shooting that took place on July 7 in Detroit’s east side.
The preliminary exam, scheduled for April 8 at the 37th District Court in Detroit, aims to establish probable cause for advancing the case to Wayne County Circuit Court for potential trial. Prosecutors are also seeking additional charges against Shaw for a separate shooting incident that occurred in the same area prior to the July shooting.
Among the victims of the July shooting were Shanae Fletcher, 20, of Harrison Township, and Phillip Arnold, 21, of Detroit. The list of injured individuals includes residents from Southfield, Oak Park, Clinton Township, Detroit, Highland Park, Eastpointe, and Chesterfield Township. Shaw was officially charged early the previous month after being linked to the incident following his identification as a suspect in a nonfatal shooting that occurred in the same neighborhood as the block party.
Following the execution of nearly a dozen search warrants in three communities, Shaw was apprehended by authorities. The preliminary exam will be overseen by District Judge Shawn Jacque. The case has garnered significant attention and concern from the community, as efforts to seek justice and accountability for the tragic events at the block party continue.
