Married store workers killed during morning shift, police say

The shooting killed a married couple who worked at the south valley grocery store.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Bystanders helped stop an armed man Tuesday after police said he fatally shot two people inside a Smith’s grocery store near Maryland Parkway and Silverado Ranch Boulevard.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers were called about 11:24 a.m. to the store in the 9700 block of South Maryland Parkway. A man and a woman, both described as being in their mid-40s, were found with gunshot wounds and died at the store.

Police identified the suspect as Alejandro Alfonso Estrada. Investigators said several bystanders moved in after the shooting, disarmed him near the pharmacy drive-thru and restrained him until officers arrived. Police later said the public was no longer in danger.

According to an arrest report, surveillance video showed Estrada walking into the store, passing through the produce section and approaching the victims as they entered aisle four. Police said the victims were married and worked at the store.

The report said Estrada and the female victim had been in a prior relationship that ended in 2021. Investigators said they shared two children. A roommate told police that Estrada had recently talked about a child support dispute and was worried about possible jail time.

Police said Estrada was carrying a .45-caliber handgun and had another firearm in a backpack. Investigators also reported finding loaded magazines. The arrest report said the weapon used in the attack was recovered after bystanders stepped in.

Estrada was taken to the Clark County Detention Center. He faces open murder, aggravated stalking and other charges, police said. A court appearance was set for Wednesday afternoon as prosecutors began the early stages of the criminal case.

The shooting shut down part of the shopping center as officers secured the store and interviewed witnesses. Police had not publicly released the victims’ names, and the investigation remained active Wednesday.
