Law enforcement personnel have saturated the Highway 86 area following a deadly morning attack.
HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A heavy law enforcement presence remains in northern Orange County following the stabbing death of a woman on Friday morning. Deputies responded to a residence on N.C. Highway 86 North where they discovered the victim deceased inside the home.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is leading the search for a male suspect who fled the scene on foot into the surrounding woods. Sheriff Charles Blackwood characterized the individual as “dangerous” and warned the public not to approach him. The investigation is currently being treated as a domestic homicide, with multiple agencies providing tactical support and aerial surveillance to locate the suspect before he can leave the immediate geographic area.
The 911 call originated at 8:07 a.m. from a witness who reported an ongoing physical altercation at the residence. When deputies reached the scene 11 minutes later, they found the suspect had already breached the back perimeter of the property. The victim, identified as an adult female, was found in a common area of the house with significant trauma. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Alicia Stemper confirmed that the attack appeared targeted and that there is no evidence suggesting a random threat to the broader community, despite the ongoing search for the perpetrator.
Ground teams consisting of more than 20 officers have been methodical in their sweep of the local brush. K-9 units from neighboring jurisdictions were called in to assist after the initial scent trail led toward a creek bed approximately a half-mile from the home. Investigators are currently checking local surveillance footage from gas stations and private residences along Highway 86 to see if the suspect may have eventually reached a vehicle. The suspect was last seen wearing dark clothing and boots, though officials noted he may have discarded outer layers to change his appearance.
Regional crime data indicates that while domestic disputes are a frequent call for service in the county, homicides involving edged weapons are statistically infrequent in this rural precinct. The last major violent incident within a five-mile radius of this location occurred over two years ago. Local authorities are reviewing past incident reports involving the suspect to establish a pattern of behavior or identify potential locations where he might seek shelter. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been requested to assist with technical processing of the crime scene.
A formal arrest warrant for murder is currently being processed through the Orange County Clerk of Superior Court. Once the suspect is apprehended, he will face an initial appearance before a judge to determine bond, though in North Carolina, first-degree murder charges typically result in a “no bond” status. The District Attorney’s office is expected to review the autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh to finalize the specific charges. No timeline for a preliminary hearing has been established while the suspect remains at large.
As the sun began to set, the search perimeter was tightened around the Cedar Grove community. Law enforcement vehicles lined the shoulders of the highway, their blue lights reflecting off the bare trees. “We are asking people in the area to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately,” Sheriff Blackwood said during a brief roadside update. Residents in the area have been seen locking gates and bringing pets indoors as the sound of helicopters persisted throughout the afternoon. The identity of the woman killed is expected to be released once her children are notified.
The investigation into the woman’s death continues as deputies transition to a night-search configuration involving thermal imaging. Law enforcement expects to maintain a visible presence in the 4100 block of Highway 86 North through the weekend until an arrest is made.
