Mangaluru, India — Authorities in Karnataka’s coastal city of Mangaluru have imposed prohibitory orders after the violent death of a man linked to a high-profile murder case. The orders will remain in effect until May 6, marking heightened police caution following the incident that occurred Thursday evening.
Suhas Shetty, a 30-year-old man with ties to local Hindutva groups, was brutally attacked by a group of at least five assailants armed with machetes and swords in a public area. The attack, which was recorded on CCTV, has raised serious concerns about public safety and ongoing tensions in the region.
Shetty was previously identified as the primary suspect in the 2022 murder of Mohammed Fazil, a 23-year-old whose death was thought to be revenge for the killing of a BJP worker, Praveen Nettaru. His history of legal issues, including multiple charges for assault and participation in unlawful assemblies, further complicates the narrative surrounding his demise.
In the wake of Shetty’s murder, police enforced a ban on public gatherings, meetings, and any activities that could pose a threat to peace. The prohibitory orders cover the entire jurisdiction of the Mangaluru Police, reflecting the administration’s commitment to maintaining order in a situation that could easily escalate.
Investigators are currently pursuing leads regarding the premeditated nature of the attack, although the motive remains unclear. Karnataka’s Home Minister G Parameshwara described the murder as “gruesome” and announced the formation of four specialized teams tasked with apprehending those responsible.
“We are fully aware of the seriousness of the situation and will take decisive action,” Parameshwara stated during a press conference. He emphasized the government’s aim to foster peace in Dakshina Kannada and assured the public that effective measures are being implemented to prevent further violence.
This incident is the second homicide reported in the area within a week. On April 27, a man named Ashraf was allegedly killed by a mob during a cricket match. Witnesses reported he was assaulted after shouting provocative phrases, leading to severe injuries that ultimately proved fatal. Initially, police detained 25 individuals for questioning, ultimately arresting 20 as the investigation progressed.
With tensions high and two brutal killings in quick succession, local authorities are under pressure to ensure community safety while addressing the underlying issues contributing to the unrest. The situation remains fluid as investigations continue and law enforcement intensifies its efforts to stabilize the region.
