Man Upgraded to Murder Charge in Indianapolis Girlfriend’s Shooting Death, No Bond Given

An Indianapolis man is now facing a murder charge in connection with the death of his girlfriend in their home. Jomal Tyler was initially charged with reckless homicide for the shooting of Britney Long on January 6, for which he had posted a $2,000 cash bond. However, following new evidence and interviews, Tyler has been charged with murder and is now being held without bond.

The tragic incident has left Long’s family in anguish. The 27-year-old mother of four was shot in the head by her boyfriend and passed away days later in the hospital after donating her organs. Long’s father, Derrick Jackson, expressed the pain of losing his daughter to domestic violence, emphasizing that despite Britney’s love for Jomal, he was abusive and ultimately took her away from her family.

Initially frustrated with the lesser charge against Tyler, Long’s family found some relief on the day of her burial, January 19, when police arrested Tyler on a murder warrant. The recklessness charge was subsequently dismissed.

According to prosecutors, additional interviews, forensics, a firearms report, and the autopsy findings point to Long’s death as a homicide. Tyler was the one who called 911 on the night of the shooting, claiming that the gun had gone off accidentally. However, new court documents have revealed discrepancies in his statements, including his use of cocaine and alcohol prior to the shooting.

Tyler’s trial is set for May 13, and Long’s family is hopeful for justice. They are also urging others to be aware of the signs of domestic violence and to seek help before it’s too late.
