Man Tried to Carjack Family Before Fatal Garland Shooting

The suspect died after a struggle with a driver whose family was inside the car, police said.

GARLAND, Texas — A Sunday afternoon crash in Garland led to several attempted carjackings before a driver fatally shot the suspect during a struggle outside a convenience store, police said.

The incident started about 3:30 p.m. near State Highway 66 and Dairy Road. Garland police said the driver of a green vehicle struck two cars, stopped at a nearby gas station and then tried to take other vehicles by force in the parking lot. Those efforts were not successful, police said.

Investigators said the man then crossed Dairy Road and entered another convenience store parking lot. A white Chevrolet Impala had pulled in with an adult male driver, two adult women and five children inside. Police said the suspect confronted the driver as he stopped and began getting out of the car.

A fight broke out between the two men, police said. During the struggle, the Impala driver drew a handgun and fired. The suspect was hit at least once and later died at a nearby hospital. Police said no one else was hurt.

Garland police had not released the suspect’s name as of Monday because relatives had not been notified. Police described him only as a Hispanic man. Investigators also had not announced what led to the first crash or why the man allegedly tried to take several vehicles afterward.

The Impala driver stayed in the parking lot after the shooting and spoke with officers, police said. No charges had been filed as of Monday. Detectives were still reviewing the crash scene, the gas station parking lot, the convenience store lot and the statements from people involved.

The case drew attention because police said several children were inside the Impala when the suspect tried to take it. The shooting also followed a fast-moving sequence that moved from a roadway crash to one parking lot and then across Dairy Road to another business.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing, with the suspect’s identity and final case findings still pending.
