Man stabbed to death in downtown Tampa as tourist faces murder charge

A visiting suspect is jailed as investigators examine an unprovoked attack.

TAMPA, Fla. — Authorities are working to determine why a visiting man allegedly stabbed a stranger to death in downtown Tampa, an attack police say occurred without warning Friday afternoon along East Zack Street.

The suspect, identified as Diego Ponce-Molina, 41, was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder with a weapon. Officers responded shortly before 4 p.m. after receiving a call about an unresponsive person. They found a man suffering from stab wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to investigators, the suspect did not flee after the attack. Officers arriving at the scene found Ponce-Molina nearby and quickly detained him. Detectives later concluded that the suspect approached the victim and carried out the assault without any apparent argument or prior contact.

Police have not identified the victim publicly, saying the process of confirming his identity and notifying relatives is ongoing. Officials said they are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby buildings and speaking with potential witnesses to reconstruct the moments leading up to the stabbing.

In court records, investigators described the encounter as sudden and unprovoked, leaving open questions about what may have motivated the suspect. Authorities have not disclosed whether mental health, substance use, or other factors are being considered as part of the investigation.

The incident unfolded in a part of downtown that includes a mix of office buildings, historic landmarks, and transportation hubs. The area near East Zack Street has long served as a gateway between Tampa’s central business district and surrounding neighborhoods, drawing workers, commuters, and visitors throughout the day.

Law enforcement officials said the speed of the response helped secure the suspect quickly, but emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages. Detectives are continuing to collect physical evidence and analyze forensic findings that could clarify the sequence of events.

Ponce-Molina remains in custody at the Hillsborough County jail. Prosecutors are expected to outline the case in greater detail during upcoming court proceedings. It was not immediately clear whether he has retained legal representation.

Police have not indicated any broader threat to the public but acknowledged the unsettling nature of a daytime attack in a busy area. Officers maintained a visible presence near the scene in the hours following the incident as investigators completed their work.

Authorities said additional updates will be provided as new information becomes available, including confirmation of the victim’s identity and any developments regarding motive.

The next scheduled court hearing for the suspect is expected in the coming days as the case moves forward.
