Man Shot Uber Eats Driver Over Attempt to Get Girlfriend’s Phone Number

Deputies reported finding suspected narcotics, hundreds of pills and more than $11,000 in cash while searching the accused man’s residence.

MIAMI, Fla. — The arrest of a Southwest Miami-Dade man accused of shooting an Uber Eats driver has developed into a second criminal case after deputies searching his apartment reported finding suspected drugs, prescription pills, cash and a room allegedly used to prepare narcotics for distribution.

Khuslen Saruultuya, 33, was arrested Monday after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office investigators accused him of confronting a delivery driver outside Pearl Dadeland Apartments earlier that morning. Saruultuya faces attempted felony murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in that case. His arrest and the subsequent search of his residence then produced a separate group of drug-related allegations, according to arrest records and local reports.

Deputies said they found suspected cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms inside the residence, along with numerous prescription pills. According to a separate arrest report, investigators also described a room that appeared to be used for mixing, dividing, labeling and packaging drugs. Authorities reported seizing about $11,394 in cash that investigators alleged was connected to drug sales.

The resulting case includes multiple drug trafficking and controlled substance charges. Court and booking information reported Tuesday listed allegations involving cocaine and other controlled substances, as well as possession-related offenses. The quantities and classifications of the substances are part of the pending criminal case and have not been established at trial.

The apartment search followed Saruultuya’s arrest in the shooting investigation. Deputies allege an Uber Eats driver had delivered food to a woman at Pearl Dadeland Apartments early Monday and returned roughly 50 minutes later hoping to see her again and possibly obtain her phone number. Investigators said Saruultuya, identified in the arrest report as the woman’s boyfriend, later confronted the driver outside the complex.

Authorities accuse Saruultuya of pointing a handgun at the driver, ordering him to the ground and firing a round that grazed him. Deputies also allege Saruultuya struck the driver in the back of the head with the gun and threatened to kill him. The driver escaped and drove himself to South Miami Hospital, where he was treated. Investigators later traced a gray Chevrolet Corvette connected to the encounter to Saruultuya and said the driver identified him in a photo lineup.

Deputies arrested Saruultuya at his apartment Monday evening without incident. He was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. During a court appearance Tuesday, a judge addressed charges from both criminal matters. When some of the alleged drug offenses were read in court, Saruultuya said some of the substances were his prescriptions before the judge instructed him not to discuss the facts of his case.

The shooting allegations and the drug allegations remain separate parts of the broader investigation. Prosecutors will have to establish the elements of each charged offense in court, and the accusations contained in arrest reports are not findings of guilt. Reporting reviewed Wednesday indicated Saruultuya remained in county custody while the cases proceeded.

Authorities have not announced a final disposition in either case. The drug evidence described by deputies, including the substances, cash and alleged packaging area, is expected to remain part of the criminal proceedings as investigators and prosecutors continue handling the charges arising from the apartment search.
