Man Shot In Face, Three Others Hit In Austin Attack

Four men were hit by gunfire Monday night after an SUV stopped beside them on North Lockwood Avenue.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago police were investigating Tuesday after a shooting in Austin left one man dead and three others wounded, including two men who were hospitalized in critical condition.

The gunfire broke out about 7:25 p.m. Monday in the 0-100 block of North Lockwood Avenue. Police said four men were on a sidewalk when an SUV drove up beside them. Someone inside the vehicle fired shots, striking each of the men.

A 32-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the face and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died. Officials had not released his name Tuesday morning. Two other victims, ages 34 and 36, were taken to hospitals in critical condition.

The 34-year-old man was shot in the right leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. The 36-year-old man was shot in the right flank and taken to Stroger Hospital. A 27-year-old man was also shot in the right leg and was listed in fair condition at Mount Sinai.

No one was in custody after the shooting, police said. Detectives had not released the shooter’s name, a vehicle description beyond an SUV, or a possible motive. The investigation remained active as police worked to identify the person who fired from the vehicle.

The shooting happened in Austin, one of Chicago’s largest West Side neighborhoods. Police reports often use early details from hospitals, witnesses and officers at the scene, and those details can change as investigators gather more evidence.

By Tuesday morning, the case stood as a fatal shooting investigation with three surviving victims still recovering from gunshot wounds. The next steps include a ruling and identification from the medical examiner’s office and any updates from detectives on arrests or suspect information.
