Man Shot by Deputy After Emerging From Burning Home

The home burned again hours after a man was shot during a family disturbance response.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Firefighters returned early Thursday to a northeast Harris County home where a deputy had shot a man the day before during a disturbance call, sheriff’s officials said.

The rekindled fire added a second scene response to a case that began Wednesday afternoon in the 15600 block of Morning Dove Drive. Officials said the original call involved a woman who reported being assaulted by her adult son before he locked himself inside the home.

Deputies arrived at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and found the woman injured, authorities said. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said deputies then saw smoke coming from the house. Officials said they believed a fire had started inside while the man remained barricaded.

The man later came out of the garage armed with two knives, law enforcement officials said. A deputy fired and hit him. The man was taken to a hospital. Officials first described him as critically injured, but a Thursday update said he was no longer at the hospital. His condition was not released.

Lt. R. Berry Jr. said firefighters were sent back to the same home after the fire rekindled. Berry said no one was inside when crews returned and that officials did not suspect foul play in the rekindled blaze. Investigators were still looking into the cause of the first fire.

Authorities said the woman’s injuries were minor. No deputies were hurt. The deputy who fired is about 31 years old and has been with the sheriff’s office for about seven years. Officials have not released the deputy’s name or said whether the deputy has been placed on administrative duty.

The investigation now includes both the deputy-involved shooting and the fire. Officials said they believe the man who was shot may have been involved in the original fire, but they have not announced a final finding. The names of the people involved have not been released.

The home remained the focus of scene work Thursday as sheriff’s investigators and fire officials reviewed the disturbance call, the shooting and both fire responses. No next briefing time had been announced.
