The sheriff’s office said homeowner Alfred B. Conner was taken into custody after Logan D. Moss was fatally shot.
PAULDING COUNTY, Ohio — A fatal shooting at a Washington Township home is headed to the Paulding County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review after authorities took the homeowner into custody and said he would initially face a murder charge.
The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office identified the man who died as Logan D. Moss, 34, of Mark Center. Deputies said they were dispatched to 19915 Road 72 at about 10:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, after receiving a report that a man had been shot.
Deputies found Moss in the driveway suffering from a gunshot wound and provided aid until Grover Hill EMS arrived and assumed his medical care. Moss was transported to OhioHealth in Van Wert, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities identified the homeowner as Alfred B. Conner, 72. The sheriff’s office said Conner was taken into custody for the shooting and transported to a local hospital for a medical assessment before incarceration. Officials said he would initially face one count of murder, an unclassified felony.
The next stage of the case is expected to include review by the county prosecutor. The sheriff’s office said the investigation would be turned over to the Paulding County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which will review the case as the criminal process moves forward. Authorities had not announced additional charges or publicly released a court schedule as of Tuesday morning.
The sheriff’s office has not said what led to the shooting. Officials have not released a motive or described the circumstances that brought Moss to the property. No public account has established what interaction took place between Moss and Conner before deputies were called.
Several agencies assisted with the response. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Grover Hill EMS and Scott EMS were at the scene, as was Paulding County Prosecutor Matthew A. Miller, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities have not announced whether additional witnesses or evidence have changed the initial account of the case.
The expected murder charge is an allegation and does not establish criminal guilt. The sheriff’s office’s initial statement focused on the emergency response, Moss’ death, Conner’s detention and the planned transfer of the case for prosecutorial review.
The investigation remained active Tuesday, though the sheriff’s office said no further information was expected to be released at that time. Questions about what preceded the shooting and the precise circumstances surrounding it remained unanswered.
