Man Killed, Another Critical After Crawfish Boil Gunfire

The shooting happened early Sunday on Bretshire Drive during a family crawfish boil.

HOUSTON, Texas — A suspect was detained after two men were shot during a family crawfish boil early Sunday in northeast Houston, leaving one dead and another critically hurt, police said.

The shooting drew Houston police to the 7700 block of Bretshire Drive at about 1:30 a.m. Officers found one victim dead outside the home and learned that another had already been taken to a hospital. Police said the case remained active Sunday.

Investigators said the violence began with an altercation involving the suspect and two adult male guests. Police said the suspect shot both men. One man was hit in the chest. The other was hit in the neck and chest before a woman drove him to a local hospital.

Police said the man taken to the hospital was in critical condition. The second victim was pronounced dead at the scene, behind a vehicle parked in front of the home. Officials said one victim was 22 years old, but the other had not yet been publicly identified.

Authorities did not say what started the argument. They also did not release the suspect’s name in the first report. The shooting took place during a family gathering, but police did not say how the suspect knew the victims or whether the detained person was also a guest.

Detectives with the Houston Police Department’s homicide unit are leading the investigation. The next steps include confirming the dead man’s identity, tracking the surviving victim’s condition and determining whether the suspect will face criminal charges.

The shooting left police focused on a residential block after a late-night gathering turned into a crime scene. As of Sunday’s update, one man was dead, another remained critically injured and the motive had not been determined.
