Houston police said the victim was working under the hood when a thief drove away.
HOUSTON, Texas — A man died in north Houston after police said a thief drove off in a car while the man was working under the hood and dragged him along Holly View Drive.
Houston police said the theft happened near Holly View Drive and Antoine Drive. The man held onto the vehicle as it moved down the street, then fell off after being dragged about 60 feet. First responders tried CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the man had been near or under the hood when someone got into the vehicle and drove away. Police have not publicly released the victim’s name, pending family notification. Officials also had not announced an arrest or released a detailed suspect description in the first report.
The case remains under investigation by Houston police. Detectives are expected to review any nearby surveillance video, speak with witnesses and track the stolen vehicle’s movement. The exact sequence of the theft, including how the thief entered the car and whether the victim knew the suspect, was not immediately clear.
Holly View Drive sits in a north Houston area lined with homes, apartments and busy connecting streets near Antoine Drive. The deadly theft brought a large police response and left investigators working to piece together how a vehicle repair or roadside stop turned into a fatal scene.
Police said the next step is identifying the person who drove away and confirming the victim’s cause and manner of death through official records. The investigation was still active Thursday, with no additional public briefing announced.
