Police found a man dead at a Union Avenue Mobil station, but early reports offered no suspect description or confirmed motive.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A fatal shooting at a Midtown gas station left Memphis police investigating a man’s death while authorities initially disclosed little about the events that led to the gunfire, a possible suspect or a motive.
Officers responded at about 8:24 p.m. Jan. 20, 2025, to the Mobil station at 2264 Union Ave. They found a man who had been shot and was dead at the scene. The first public accounts contained no information identifying the person believed to have fired the shot or shots.
The limited release of information left investigators with several basic issues that were not resolved publicly in the immediate reporting. Authorities did not say whether the victim and the shooter knew each other, whether an argument or another confrontation occurred or how long either person had been at the gas station before the shooting.
No confirmed motive was included in the early police information. Reports also did not provide a suspect description, identify a suspected getaway vehicle or say whether investigators were searching for one person or multiple people. Those details are often central to a public appeal for help, but they had not been released at that stage of the case.
The location itself could offer investigators possible sources of evidence. The Union Avenue property operates as a convenience store and fuel station with multiple pump islands. Public reporting did not establish whether investigators recovered usable surveillance video from the business, nearby properties or vehicles that were in the area when the shooting happened.
Police did not publicly describe the sequence of events inside or outside the station in the reports reviewed for this article. It therefore remained unclear whether the victim was near a vehicle, one of the pumps or another part of the property when the shooting occurred. Authorities also did not release information establishing whether anything was taken from the victim.
Investigators asked anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers. The request indicated police were still seeking information from the public as they worked to determine what happened and identify whoever was responsible.
Separate reporting described the death as an ongoing investigation and said no suspect information had been released. Early accounts also said the victim’s identity had not yet been made public while notification of relatives was pending.
No later source located during a review of the case identified a publicly announced arrest or supplied a confirmed motive for the killing. In the absence of a documented investigative update, the available public record leaves the identity of the shooter and the circumstances leading to the man’s death unresolved.
