Man dies, several hurt in six-car crash on La Jolla Parkway

Detectives are reviewing potential dashcam footage after a Thursday night pileup near Hidden Valley Road.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego police opened a fatal-collision investigation after six vehicles crashed near La Jolla Parkway and Hidden Valley Road around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, killing a man and injuring several others. Officers closed lanes and redirected traffic while paramedics treated the wounded.

The multi-vehicle wreck struck one of La Jolla’s key connectors, affecting drivers heading between the village and the Torrey Pines area. Police said multiple people were transported with injuries; they did not release a precise number by late Thursday. The Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the man who died once relatives are notified. The crash, which scattered debris across several lanes, forced investigators to establish an extended work zone and kept closures in place as night crews documented the scene.

Police said a Tesla involved in the wreck had a camera system that may provide crucial video for reconstructing the sequence of impacts. Officers collected statements from drivers and witnesses and flagged nearby homes for potential security footage. In a public notice, the department said a fatal traffic investigation was underway and warned of significant delays, adding, “Road closures are in place and traffic is impacted. Please avoid the area and use alternate routes.” Officer Anthony Carrazco said detectives would confirm injury totals after interviews and records checks were complete.

Authorities did not say what triggered the chain reaction, and they have not disclosed whether speed, impairment or lighting played a role. The corridor, which dips toward the coast and feeds Interstate 5, can stay busy after dark as commuters, hospital staff and visitors move through La Jolla’s hills. Residents reported hearing a loud crash followed by car horns and sirens before officers arrived. Fire crews inspected each vehicle and checked for entrapment while police mapped skid marks, measured distances and photographed impact points for the case file.

Standard procedures in fatal crashes include retrieving onboard data, if available, and securing any video that captured pre-impact movements such as lane changes or braking. Detectives planned to review the Tesla’s recordings and canvass for dashcam clips from other drivers. Tow operations began only after investigators finished diagramming the area. The department said it would release additional details in the coming days, including an updated injury count and preliminary cause, once evidence review and next-of-kin notifications are complete.

Drivers diverted from the parkway described a long line of vehicles inching through neighborhood side streets. “Officers kept everyone calm and moved us along,” said Dana Ruiz, who turned around near Hidden Valley Road after seeing multiple fire engines and paramedic units. Another motorist said crews focused on two heavily damaged cars at the center of the scene while others were staged for removal downhill.

Late Thursday, portions of La Jolla Parkway remained restricted while crews cleared wreckage and addressed fluid spills. Police said further updates would follow the initial report and video review. An initial briefing is expected after detectives finish interviews and collect any additional footage.
