Man Arrested for Detonating Explosive Device Outside Alabama AG’s Office

Montgomery, Alabama – A 26-year-old man from Irondale, Alabama, was taken into custody by authorities for his alleged involvement in the detonation of an explosive device outside the office of State Attorney General Steve Marshall in February, as reported by the Department of Justice.

Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert faces charges of malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device. The arrest came weeks after the explosion occurred around 3:45 a.m. on February 24 outside Marshall’s office in Montgomery.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed that a suspicious package found the Monday following the explosion was identified as the device used in the detonation. The bomb included commercially available pyrotechnic fireworks as the main explosive charge, with metal screws, nails, and ignitable liquids added for enhanced fragmentation and ignitability.

Surveillance footage released showed a man walking near the site moments after the incident. While no injuries or significant damage to nearby buildings were reported, charging documents revealed that Calvert had placed stickers on state buildings advocating for various political ideologies, including support for the far-left militant movement known as “antifa.”

Attorney General Marshall expressed relief at the arrest, stating that the act was not random violence and thanking federal and local partners for their support. Additionally, an FBI agent noted that the use of added metal hardware and ignitable liquids in the explosive device demonstrated weaponization characteristics.

Calvert potentially faces up to 20 years in prison for his actions.Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the incident, leaving the investigation ongoing.
