TAMPA, Fla. — A roadway confrontation in Ybor City resulted in the tragic death of Dedrick Sykes, a well-known local DJ, and the arrest of Joel Moreno Cobo, who has been charged with second-degree murder. This incident has raised concerns about road rage and safety in the community.
The shooting unfolded on November 14 at approximately 7:10 p.m. at the intersection of East 5th Avenue and North 22nd Street. Officers responding to the scene discovered two vehicles: a black BMW sedan parked eastbound and a red Jeep Grand Cherokee facing west. Sykes, aged 41, was found lying unresponsive between the two vehicles.
According to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), the situation escalated when Cobo, driving the BMW, became frustrated with an SUV obstructing his path and flashed his lights at it. As traffic began to clear, Sykes, positioned behind the SUV, also turned onto East 5th Avenue and engaged in a verbal exchange with Cobo. The conflict reached a breaking point when Sykes exited his Jeep without any visible threat or weapon, moments before gunfire erupted.
Despite efforts to save him, Sykes succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, Cobo remained at the scene, with a firearm holstered at his waist. He asserted that he acted in self-defense and cooperated with investigators during questioning.
Following an investigation, a warrant for Cobo’s arrest was issued on November 20. Authorities apprehended him at his residence later that evening and transported him to the Orient Road Jail, where he is now being held.
TPD Chief Lee Bercaw emphasized the thoroughness of the investigation and the significance of relying on evidence to bring clarity to the situation. “Justice is rooted in evidence, and that has guided our entire investigation,” Bercaw stated, acknowledging the impact on Sykes’ family.
The incident has sparked discourse regarding road safety and how quickly tensions can spiral into violence. Community leaders and residents are now calling for initiatives aimed at preventing such tragedies in the future.
