Redford Township, Mich.—Decades have passed since Belinda Gardella was fatally stabbed, but her children are still seeking answers about their mother’s death and are determined to pursue justice, regardless of where their investigation may lead.
Belinda’s son, Ron Gardella, voiced his family’s ongoing quest for closure in a recent episode of “Cold Justice.” He emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth, stating, “Justice for my mom, that’s all I’m asking for.” This determination has drawn the attention of “Cold Justice” prosecutor Kelly Siegler and defense attorney Murray Newman, who collaborated with local detectives to revisit the case, hoping new insights could bring resolution to the Gardella family.
The tragic events unfolded on September 25, 1983, when Belinda was reportedly attacked after dining with her ex-husband, Paul Gardella. According to Paul, two men attempted to rob them at an intersection, leading to Belinda being stabbed. Despite his account, her children have long harbored doubts about his story and suspect he may be hiding the truth. However, despite multiple attempts, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has repeatedly declined to pursue legal action, citing insufficient evidence.
Siegler commented on the family’s lengthy wait for justice, asserting, “Her children have been waiting 42 years for justice. It’s time.” To investigate further, the team began by interviewing Elaine Hunter, an emergency room nurse who treated Belinda on the fateful night. Hunter recalled Belinda arriving without a pulse and shared a troubling comment from Paul’s relatives during their visit to the hospital.
To assess the credibility of Paul’s narrative, the team consulted forensic pathologist Dr. Kathryn Pinneri, who analyzed Belinda’s autopsy report. Pinneri determined that the nature and angle of the stab wound suggested it was more plausible that the attacker was in the driver’s seat, countering Paul’s account of a street mugging. Ron Gardella revealed that his father had owned knives similar to the murder weapon but claimed to have disposed of them after the incident.
The investigation also delved into Paul Gardella’s history. His children recounted their traumatic childhood experiences, describing a household filled with fear due to their father’s violent behavior. Ron shared harrowing details of the abuse he and his siblings endured, painting a disturbing picture that left many questioning the safety of their mother during and after their tumultuous marriage.
In a notable confrontation, detectives located Paul in Clearwater, Florida. Although he allowed them into his home, he grew evasive about the specifics surrounding Belinda’s death, maintaining his innocence and abruptly shifting the conversation to his later life-saving experiences.
Back in Michigan, detectives believed they gathered enough evidence to present the case to prosecutors once more. Despite their efforts, the Wayne County office declined to act in 2025. As a new strategy, investigators aim to submit the case to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, hoping that jurisdictional nuances might press forward the pursuit of justice.
While the resulting outlook remains uncertain, the Gardella children remain steadfast in their resolve. With each passing year, their hope for answers grows stronger, and they are more determined than ever to shine a light on their mother’s tragic fate.
