Journalist Attacked by Ruling Party Cadres in Dhaka: BJIM Calls for Improved Safety Measures

New Delhi, India – The Bangladesh Journalists in International Media (BJIM) has issued a strong statement condemning the recent attack on journalist Sabbir Ahmed and urging for better safety measures for journalists in Bangladesh. Sabbir, a correspondent for Shomoyer Alo, was viciously assaulted by a group believed to be associated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), a student organization linked to the ruling Awami League party. The attack occurred on Friday evening in Dhaka’s Titumir College premises.

According to Tawsif Maimun, president of the Titumir College journalist association, Sabbir was targeted due to his reporting, which the BCL felt was detrimental to their reputation. The assailants used iron rods and hockey sticks during the attack, leaving Sabbir with severe head and back injuries. This incident is part of a larger pattern of violence against journalists by the BCL, with little repercussion for the perpetrators.

BJIM has expressed concerns over the lack of accountability and a culture of impunity that allows pro-government groups like the BCL to repeatedly target members of the press. The organization is demanding that the government cover Sabbir’s medical expenses and ensure that those responsible for the attack are held accountable for their actions. The safety and protection of journalists are essential for upholding freedom of the press in Bangladesh.

In a press release dated March 22, 2024, BJIM emphasized the need for improved safety measures to prevent such attacks in the future. The brutal assault on Sabbir Ahmed serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by journalists in Bangladesh, particularly when reporting on sensitive or controversial issues. It is imperative that authorities take concrete steps to address the growing threats to press freedom in the country.

BJIM, representing journalists in international media, stands in solidarity with Sabbir and all journalists facing similar threats and attacks. The organization calls for justice and accountability in this case and urges the government to prioritize the safety of journalists in Bangladesh. Press freedom is a fundamental pillar of democracy, and protecting the rights of journalists is crucial for upholding transparency and accountability in society.
