Joliet Police Manhunt: Suspect Identified in Fatal Shootings of 8, Manhunt Underway

JOLIET, Ill. – A horrifying crime scene unfolded in the Joliet area over the span of two days, leaving eight people dead and one person injured. This tragedy has sparked a manhunt for the suspect, Romeo Nance, who is believed to be the sole perpetrator. The Joliet police chief, Bill Evans, described the scene as one of the worst he has ever encountered in his 29 years as a police officer.

The devastating incident took place at two different residences in the 2200 block of West Acres Road, according to a statement released by Joliet police. The victims were found with gunshot wounds, and the suspect, Nance, is considered armed and dangerous. Notably, Nance has a criminal history and is connected to the victims of this heinous crime.

Law enforcement officers were led to the crime scenes after identifying Nance’s vehicle in connection to a previous shooting in unincorporated Joliet Township. Despite his absence from the scene, officers managed to track down Nance’s last-known address, which ultimately led them to the discovery of the tragic events at the two homes on West Acres Road.

Authorities have intensified their efforts to locate Nance, who is described as 6 foot 2 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds. His criminal record shows a previous arrest on multiple gun-related charges, including aggravated discharge and reckless discharge of a firearm. The suspect’s troubled history includes his involvement in a car chase and subsequent confrontations with law enforcement.

The investigation into these shocking events began when deputies responded to a call about a man who had sustained a gunshot wound to his head at the Pheasant Run Apartments. Tragically, the victim, Toyosi Baker, succumbed to his injuries. The sheriff’s office has also reported a separate shooting incident, heightening concerns about the potential danger posed by the suspect.

As authorities continue their pursuit of Nance, the community in Joliet is reeling from the aftermath of these senseless acts of violence. Significant road closures have been implemented, and a command post has been established to oversee the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, the family and friends of the victims have gathered for support, enveloped in a shared sense of grief and disbelief.
