Nazareth, Israel – A 24-year-old Arab Israeli man, Fahad Qubati, found himself in a harrowing situation while on vacation in Greece. Mistaken for being Jewish, he was violently attacked by three men, sustaining severe injuries to his jaw and head. Qubati, now back in Israel receiving medical treatment at Baruch Padeh Medical Center in Poriya, near Tiberias, is set to undergo multiple surgeries to address his injuries.
According to Qubati’s mother, Jacqueline, her son narrowly escaped what could have been a fatal encounter, as the attackers ceased their assault only after realizing he was an Arab Christian. The incident occurred after Qubati offered a ride to Israeli tourists following a party in Greece. The assailants erroneously assumed that he was Jewish, leading to the brutal attack.
Jacqueline recounted the terrifying ordeal and the intervention of a Tunisian citizen that ultimately helped her son prove his ethnicity, prompting the attackers to flee. She expressed deep sorrow over the incident and highlighted the risks faced by Israeli travelers abroad, calling attention to the need for increased awareness and security measures.
Antisemitism in Greece has been a longstanding issue, with a significant portion of the population exhibiting prejudicial attitudes towards Jews. Research conducted by the Anti-Defamation League in 2014 revealed that approximately 69% of Greeks held antisemitic views, marking one of the highest levels globally outside of the Middle East. The presence of neo-Nazi groups, economic challenges, and geopolitical events have contributed to the perpetuation of antisemitic sentiments in Greek society.
In light of the recent surge in violent attacks targeting Jews and Israelis worldwide, stemming from conflicts in the Middle East, there is a pressing need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to combat intolerance. The incident involving Fahad Qubati serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by individuals of certain ethnic or religious backgrounds while traveling abroad, underscoring the importance of promoting tolerance and understanding across communities.
