Iraq War Veteran Overcomes Injury to Serve His Community

KILLEEN, Texas – Former Fort Cavazos soldier Rod Ford’s military career was cut short after being wounded during his second deployment in Iraq. As a Killeen resident, he vividly recalls the harrowing experience that led to his Purple Heart.

During his 18-month deployment from 2005-2007, Ford’s second mission involved serving on a quick response force. He was injured when a truck, suspected of planting explosives in the desert, detonated near him and his captain. Despite their efforts, the captain did not survive, and Ford suffered shrapnel wounds to his left knee.

After serving for eight-and-a-half years, Ford was medically discharged in November 2011. His family has deep ties to the military, with his father, Rodney Kent Ford Sr., being stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, before tragically passing away in a motorcycle accident when Ford was a young boy.

Despite the challenges, Ford looks back on his military service fondly, acknowledging the valuable lessons and experiences gained. He describes how the military exposed him to diverse cultures and backgrounds, providing an invaluable education in empathy and understanding.

Following his discharge, Ford pursued higher education, earning an associate degree in general studies. He is currently involved in various community initiatives, serving as sergeant-at-arms for the Military Order of the Purple Heart chapter 1876 and as president of the Purple Heart Riders motorcycle association.

As a single father of three, Ford reflects on the impact of his military service, emphasizing the importance of structure and the unique perspective gained from serving in the military. Despite the challenges, Ford remains grateful for the opportunity to serve and encourages others to consider military service as a valuable learning experience.

In conclusion, Rod Ford’s journey from a military family background to his own service and eventual injury reflects the enduring impact of military service. His personal story sheds light on the sacrifices and challenges faced by many veterans, as well as the resilience and determination they exhibit in the face of adversity.
