Iowa School Shooting: Sixth-Grade Student Killed in Mass Shooting Identified as Ahmir Jolliff

PERRY, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety confirmed that Ahmir Jolliff, an 11-year-old sixth-grade student, was the victim of the tragic shooting at Perry High School on Jan. 4. It was determined that he died from three gunshot wounds inflicted by the shooter, 17-year-old Dylan Butler, who then died by suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting, which began in the school cafeteria before classes started that Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., also left the high school’s principal, two staff members, and four students injured.

According to the Iowa DPS, a total of seven people were injured during the shooting, not including the deceased. Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger is in critical condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, and two students remain hospitalized. The rest of the injured individuals have been treated and released.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds expressed her condolences to the Perry community. “Our hearts are heavy today and our prayers are with the Perry community. This senseless tragedy has shaken our entire state to the core, and I want this community to know that every Iowan stands with you,” she said at a press conference.

As authorities continue their investigation, large volumes of digital and social media evidence have been seized for review, along with ongoing background investigations and witness accounts. Once the investigation is complete, the Division of Criminal Investigation’s report will be turned over to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office to determine any additional courses of action.

The community, students, and faculty continue to mourn the tragic event, as they seek answers and healing after this devastating event.
