Iowa School Principal Dies Heroically Protecting Students During Shooting

PERRY, Iowa (AP) — A beloved Iowa school principal who selflessly shielded his students during a shooting has tragically succumbed to his injuries after putting up a brave fight for 10 days.

Principal Dan Marburger of Perry High School passed away on Sunday morning after valiantly attempting to protect his students from the school shooter. His widow, Elizabeth, expressed their family’s profound loss, stating, “Although Dan is no longer fighting with us here, his family will continue to deal with the unfathomable for many days, weeks, and years to come. He fought hard and gave us 10 days that we will treasure forever.”

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds issued a statement mourning the loss of Marburger and acknowledging his heroic sacrifice. The entire state of Iowa is mourning the death of the principal, who will be remembered for his selfless actions and dedication to his students, the Governor said.

Marburger’s daughter, Claire, reflected on her father’s bravery, expressing that she was not surprised to hear that he had sacrificed himself to protect the students and staff. His selfless act saved many lives that day.

The tragedy unfolded on January 4 when a 17-year-old student armed with a shotgun and a handgun opened fire at the school, resulting in the death of a sixth-grade student. Marburger, along with two other staff members and four students, were wounded in the shooting. The shooter took his own life following the rampage.

Revelations emerged about the shooter’s potential ties to LGBTQ activism, sparking a discussion about the alleged connection between recent mass shootings and individuals who identify as transgender or nonbinary.

The Perry community is reeling from the loss of Principal Marburger, who will forever be remembered for his bravery in the face of danger. As they continue to grieve, the community will honor his memory and legacy.
