Beirut, Lebanon – The United Nations is currently investigating an explosion in southern Lebanon that resulted in three UN personnel and a translator sustaining injuries. According to a statement from Andrea Tenenti, spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the incident occurred when three military observers from the Observer Group Lebanon (OGL) and a Lebanese language assistant were on a foot patrol near the Blue Line.
The injured individuals were quickly evacuated for medical treatment, and the UN is actively working to determine the source of the explosion, as stated by Tenenti. Observer Group Lebanon (OGL) collaborates with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the region, where UNTSO military observers play a critical role in monitoring ceasefires, overseeing armistice agreements, and preventing conflicts from escalating.
In addition to supporting UNIFIL’s peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, UNTSO military observers are unarmed and trained to observe and report any violations of ceasefire agreements.
