Intruder Forces Into Atlanta Apartment, Kills Man in Targeted Attack

Police say a 35-year-old man was killed after someone forced entry into a Peek Road apartment Friday afternoon.

ATLANTA — A 35-year-old man was fatally shot inside a northwest Atlanta apartment Friday while his fiancée and a young child were present, leaving homicide detectives searching for the person police say forced their way into the home.

Atlanta police were called to the Park West apartment complex on Peek Road NW shortly after 3 p.m. Sept. 11. Officers found the man inside an apartment suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

The presence of the victim’s fiancée and a young child has become a key part of the early investigation because police say both were inside when the shooting occurred. Authorities have not publicly identified them, described what they told detectives or said whether investigators consider either person an eyewitness who could identify the shooter.

Police said the victim had returned home before a person allegedly forced entry into the apartment and opened fire. Homicide detectives believe the attack was targeted, although authorities have not publicly identified a motive or disclosed what evidence led investigators to that assessment.

The man’s name has not been released. Police also have not identified a suspect, issued a public description of the shooter or announced an arrest. Authorities have not said whether the person who entered the apartment knew the victim or whether anything was taken from the residence.

Investigators expanded their work beyond the apartment after the shooting. A police K-9 unit searched the surrounding area, while detectives contacted apartment management about possible surveillance video. Police also said residents were cooperating with the investigation and providing information.

Detectives have said they have evidence to follow up on but have not detailed what was recovered or learned. Police have not announced whether surveillance footage has been located, whether a vehicle may have been involved or how the shooter left the property.

The shooting was reported at the Park West complex at 2798 Peek Road NW. Another local report said officers responded to the 2700 block after a call about shots fired at about 3:15 p.m. The small difference in reported response times does not change the basic sequence described by authorities: officers arrived Friday afternoon and found the 35-year-old man dead inside an apartment.

The apartment complex was also the scene of an unrelated shooting in June, when police said a dispute involving a large group ended with two teenagers wounded. Investigators have not suggested any connection between that case and Friday’s killing, and no relationship between the incidents has been established.

The Sept. 11 homicide remains under investigation. Police had not publicly identified the victim or shooter, disclosed a motive or announced an arrest as of Sunday, leaving several central questions about the attack unresolved.
