Officers rendered emergency aid after arriving at the Willow Chase Boulevard apartment, where police said two adults were later confirmed dead.
HOUSTON, Texas — A 19-year-old mother carried her critically wounded infant out of a northwest Houston apartment Saturday night after the child’s father shot the baby and the child’s grandmother during an argument, Houston police said.
The mother was not physically injured in the shooting, police said. Officers responding about 7:35 p.m. Oct. 31 to the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard encountered a rapidly unfolding emergency involving the wounded infant, the mother’s roughly 40-year-old parent and the infant’s father. Police said the man was later found dead inside the apartment from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Investigators said the child’s father had gone to the apartment to deliver diapers. He and the 19-year-old mother began arguing, and police said the man then pulled out a gun. He shot the older woman and the infant, investigators said. Authorities have not released information explaining what the argument was about or whether there had been an earlier dispute.
After the gunfire, police said, the young mother took the wounded infant outside. Officers arriving at the apartment turned their attention to the injured family members while the scene was secured. Houston police Lt. Michael Pulido said officers performed CPR on the older woman and applied a chest seal before paramedics arrived.
Houston Fire Department crews transported the woman and infant to a hospital. The woman was pronounced dead. The infant remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday morning, with one local report describing the baby as critical but stable. Police have not released the child’s age or provided a more detailed medical update.
Inside the apartment, officers found the child’s father dead from what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police have not released his name. Investigators have also withheld the identity of the woman who died, and the infant has not been publicly identified.
The mother’s actions became a central part of the initial police account because she was able to leave the apartment with the wounded child despite the gunfire. Police have not released a detailed timeline showing how much time passed between the shootings, the mother leaving the residence and the first officers reaching the scene.
Investigators also have not disclosed whether other people were inside the apartment during the shooting or whether anyone witnessed the entire confrontation. Authorities have not publicly released information about any prior calls involving the family, and police have not announced a specific motive. The information released so far centers on the argument that investigators said began after the father arrived with diapers.
The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division is handling the investigation. With the suspected shooter dead, authorities had not announced a search for another suspect in the case as of Sunday morning. Detectives were continuing to piece together the circumstances surrounding the argument and shooting while the infant remained under hospital care.
No identities had been publicly released by Sunday morning, and police had not announced any further change in the baby’s condition. The shooting left one adult victim dead, the suspected shooter dead and the infant critically injured, while the child’s 19-year-old mother survived without being shot.
