Tarkwa, Ghana — A man has been sentenced to a year in prison with hard labor for physically assaulting a student during a dispute connected to illegal mining activities in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, located in the western part of the country. The court deemed the attack, which left the victim with serious injuries, as reckless and unprovoked.
Bismark Owusu, the convicted individual, admitted guilt to charges of causing unlawful harm after he used a blade to slash his victim, Bright Akwasi Aboagye, twice. The incident took place on October 7, 2025, amid a confrontation involving a group of illegal miners who were reportedly assaulting another man accused of stealing gold-bearing stones.
During the court proceedings, prosecutors outlined the sequence of events that led to the violent encounter. Aboagye, who was riding a tricycle with a passenger, attempted to intervene when he witnessed a young man being beaten. This action intensified the situation, ultimately resulting in Owusu targeting him later that day.
After an initial de-escalation, Owusu allegedly found Aboagye at a local game center and reignited their confrontation. Witnesses reported that Owusu assaulted the student, causing multiple cuts on his back before fleeing the scene.
Local residents quickly responded to the commotion, assisting Aboagye and transporting him to Bompieso Clinic for emergency medical treatment. Following his recovery, the incident was reported to law enforcement authorities, leading to Owusu’s arrest later that day.
Owusu was subsequently brought before the Tarkwa District Court, where Judge Charles Owusu Nsiah presided over the case.
