The 19-year-old was not shot as violence killed her mother, critically wounded her baby and left the child’s father dead.
HOUSTON, Texas — A 19-year-old mother carried her critically wounded infant out of a northwest Houston apartment after police say the child’s father shot the baby and fatally wounded the young woman’s mother during an argument Saturday night.
The young mother was not physically injured in the shooting in the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard, Houston police said. Her mother, described by authorities as about 40 years old, later died at a hospital. The infant remained in critical condition in the most recent public update, while the baby’s father was found dead inside the apartment from what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police said the child’s father had gone to the apartment to deliver diapers before an argument began with the 19-year-old. Investigators said the confrontation escalated when he produced a gun and shot the older woman and the infant. Authorities have not publicly explained what caused the dispute to turn violent, and they have not released the names of the people involved.
Officers were dispatched around 7:35 p.m. Saturday. Police said the 19-year-old had managed to get the wounded child outside by the time authorities responded. Inside the apartment, officers found the man dead. Police and Houston Fire Department personnel then focused on emergency treatment for the grandmother and infant.
Officers performed CPR and other emergency care on the wounded woman before paramedics arrived, according to police accounts of the response. The woman and infant were taken to a hospital, where the grandmother was pronounced dead. The infant was reported in critical condition Sunday, with one report describing the child as critical but stable. No newer public medical update was found Monday.
The violence also unsettled people who lived at or were familiar with the apartment complex. Residents interviewed after the shooting described the event as heartbreaking and raised broader concerns about feeling secure at the property. Police, however, have not said that building security or conditions at the apartment complex contributed to the shooting.
Former resident Cesar Castillo told KPRC that he had concerns about security at the complex and said those concerns were among his reasons for leaving. Resident Alexandra Barlow also expressed sadness over the shooting, particularly because an infant was among those wounded. Their comments reflected the shock surrounding the incident but did not establish what caused the confrontation inside the apartment.
The Houston Police Department said multiple witnesses were available as homicide investigators worked at the scene. Detectives and crime scene personnel were gathering statements and evidence to establish the sequence of events. Authorities have not publicly detailed what those witnesses saw or whether all were inside the apartment when the gunfire began.
The case leaves the 19-year-old mother dealing with the death of her mother while her infant remains hospitalized. Police have not disclosed the child’s age, identified the hospital or provided additional information about the baby’s treatment. Authorities also have not released further details about the relationship between the young mother and the child’s father beyond identifying them as the infant’s parents.
Investigators have described the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide, but the homicide inquiry remains open as police complete witness interviews and evidence reviews. No criminal prosecution is expected against the suspected gunman because he died at the scene, though investigators still must document the circumstances surrounding both deaths and the infant’s injuries.
As of Monday, police had not publicly released the identities of those involved or announced a change in the infant’s condition. The Houston Police Department’s homicide investigation remained underway.
