HOUSTON, TX – A Harris County jury has sentenced Jermaine Thomas to 50 years in prison for the murder of his adopted son, 7-year-old Troy Koller. The case, which has gripped the community since 2022, began when Troy’s lifeless body was discovered inside a washing machine at the family’s residence in North Harris County.
In court, emotions ran high as Troy’s first-grade teacher, Cheryl Reed, confronted Thomas. Reed, who described Troy as a child who brought joy and energy to her classroom, spoke passionately about the impact of his loss. “He was like a son I never had,” she said, emphasizing the deep bond she felt with her student.
The investigation revealed that Thomas had drowned Troy and struck him with an object. Reed expressed disbelief and sorrow over the brutality of the crime. “It’s heartless and cruel,” she stated, reflecting the sentiments of many who followed the trial.
Reed’s presence in court was more than just a testament to her affection for Troy; it was a stand for justice. She wanted to ensure that Troy was remembered as more than just a victim. “He wasn’t just a seven-year-old boy found in a washing machine,” she declared, recalling his love for Sonic the Hedgehog and his eagerness to help others.
Throughout the proceedings, Reed maintained eye contact with Thomas, observing his demeanor. “He didn’t shed any tears, but he did look at me,” she noted, underscoring the chilling nature of the encounter.
With Thomas now sentenced, Reed hopes he reflects on his actions daily. “I want him to think about Troy every single day,” she said, expressing a wish for enduring remorse.
The case is not yet closed for the family, as Troy’s adoptive mother is scheduled to appear in court next month. Reed has vowed to attend if her presence is needed, continuing her advocacy for Troy.
In a bid to honor his memory, Reed plans to establish a foundation aimed at supporting children in vulnerable situations, a cause she believes Troy would have cherished.
