Horses Found Starved to Death in Alleged Abuse Case Sparks Community Outrage in Ohio

COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio — Authorities are investigating a disturbing case of animal neglect after several deceased horses were discovered in a barn at the Pure Gold Horse Stables in Salem Township. The findings raise serious concerns about the treatment of the animals at the facility.

On Sunday afternoon, deputies from the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of potential animal cruelty at the stables. The call came from a prospective buyer who stumbled upon four horse skeletons inside the barn, prompting immediate action from law enforcement.

Initial investigations indicated that the horses had potentially been confined and starved, leading to their demise. An incident report described the remains as mostly decomposed, with only patches of skin remaining visible. Investigators suggested that the skeletal remains could have been there for months, possibly since the winter season.

Further examination revealed wooden pens that showed signs of apparent chewing, along with remnants of straw in the stalls, signaling a neglectful environment. The prospective buyer also reported witnessing seven other horses in poor health during her lease of the property, which she had been caring for independently.

Continuing the investigation, law enforcement returned to the stables the following day accompanied by a member of the humane society. They spoke with the horses’ owner, who has previously faced allegations of neglect related to her animals. The owner claimed that the horses received regular veterinary care and that she believed they died due to poisoning by a former employee.

The case is now in the hands of the Columbiana County Humane Society and has been referred to the county prosecutor’s office for further legal action. In a public statement, the prosecutor’s office expressed its commitment to ensuring that the allegations are thoroughly investigated and highlighted the seriousness of the claims.

The Columbiana County Humane Society also voiced its awareness of community concerns regarding the situation, describing the events as “horrific and heartbreaking.” While they appreciate public interest, they urged for patience and understanding as the investigation unfolds, indicating that sharing details prematurely could hinder their efforts.

As the investigation continues, officials seek any additional information from the public to aid in uncovering the specifics surrounding this unsettling case of animal neglect. The authorities remain dedicated to ensuring accountability and addressing the welfare of animals in their jurisdiction.
