Waynesboro, Va. — A 46-year-old woman was killed during an aggravated assault at a home on 13th Street late Monday night, prompting a police pursuit that extended beyond city limits.
The victim, identified as Laura V. Humphries, was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the attack. Meanwhile, 57-year-old Gaines Randolph Thomas, the suspected assailant, was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after reports of a suicidal individual armed with a knife.
Authorities responded to a domestic disturbance at approximately 9:21 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival at the 13th Street residence, they found Humphries injured and Thomas fleeing in a white BMW SUV. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, a chase ensued, leading officers into neighboring Augusta and Nelson counties before the suspect’s reckless driving forced them to terminate the pursuit in Albemarle County.
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Thomas around 8:15 a.m. at a location on Old Whitehill Road following a tip-off about his condition. He now faces felony charges, including second-degree murder and eluding law enforcement.
The investigation remained ongoing overnight at the 300 block of 13th Street, with police collecting evidence at the scene. Additional charges could arise as officials continue their probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
