Homicide Investigation Leads to Charges Against Four in Gary Teen’s Death

GARY, Ind. — Authorities have charged four individuals in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jace Smith and the attempted murder of a teenager following a shooting incident last week. The Lake County Coroner’s Office classified Smith’s death as homicide caused by a gunshot.

On the evening of October 17, police responded to a report of gunfire in the 300 block of Clark Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered Smith suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged Samuel Shelhart, Antonio D. Brown, Derrick Nicholson, and Damarion Crossley. Each faces multiple serious charges, including two counts of attempted murder and aggravated battery, alongside criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement.

In addition to the shared charges, Brown is under scrutiny for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident related to the incident. Meanwhile, Crossley faces four counts of unlawful firearm use. The charges also pertain to an unidentified 17-year-old, though authorities have not disclosed whether the teen was injured or detailed their involvement.

Authorities confirmed that all four suspects are currently being held at the Lake County Jail as the investigation continues. The law enforcement agencies seek clarity on the events leading to the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the charges.
