Homicide: Birmingham Faces Tragic Surge as City Records Third Killing in One Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A violent weekend unfolded in Birmingham, resulting in the city’s third homicide on Saturday night. In a tragic incident, Jeremiah Stone, a 31-year-old local resident, was fatally shot on the city’s west side, further highlighting the ongoing concern over gun violence in the area.

On Sunday, law enforcement confirmed Stone’s identity following the shooting, which occurred around 11:20 p.m. in the 1800 block of Henry Crumpton Drive. Officers from the West Precinct arrived at the scene to find Stone severely injured on the roadway. Emergency services pronounced him dead shortly afterward.

In a troubling turn of events, authorities later discovered another male victim with gunshot wounds in the nearby 2500 block of John Bryant Road. This individual was promptly transported to UAB Hospital and is expected to survive.

According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, the initial investigation suggests that Stone and the second victim were in a vehicle on Henry Crumpton Drive when they came under fire from one or more assailants. Detectives are probing into whether the shooting was linked to an earlier altercation involving one of the victims.

As of now, no arrests have been made regarding Stone’s murder. This incident marks the fourth shooting death in Birmingham within a 24-hour span, a grim reality that has shaken the community. Earlier on Saturday, a domestic shooting claimed the life of a 30-year-old man in northern Birmingham, followed just hours later by the shooting death of an 18-year-old near Ensley Park, where multiple rounds were fired.

Authorities have managed to apprehend suspects in the earlier two incidents, raising questions about the effectiveness of community safety measures as the city grapples with a rising number of homicides. Officer Fitzgerald expressed alarm over the string of shootings, deeming the loss of three lives in a single day deeply troubling.

With Stone’s death, Birmingham has recorded its 72nd homicide of the year, a steep increase compared to 2024, which saw 135 homicides by early November. Overall, Jefferson County has witnessed 104 killings, underscoring a troubling trend in violence.

Law enforcement is urging anyone with information regarding the recent shootings to come forward. Community members are encouraged to assist investigators in their efforts to resolve these cases by contacting local detectives or Crime Stoppers.
