Deputies said a firearm was recovered after three adults were wounded in the tailgate area at Lucy C. Laney High School.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — A woman arrested after a shooting at Lucy C. Laney High School’s homecoming tailgate faces three aggravated assault counts and several firearm-related allegations after authorities said a confrontation escalated into gunfire that wounded three adults.
Richmond County sheriff’s deputies identified the arrested woman as Aiyana Lane. Authorities allege Lane became involved in a physical confrontation with another woman Saturday evening in the school’s tailgate area. Other people broke up the fight, investigators said, but Lane then allegedly produced a firearm and fired at least one shot in the direction of the woman with whom she had been fighting.
Two men and a woman suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to area hospitals, the Sheriff’s Office said. Their injuries were described as not life-threatening. Officials have not publicly identified the three wounded people or released detailed information about their conditions. The Richmond County School System said all of the people involved in the dispute were adults and no students were involved in the shooting.
Deputies arrested Lane at the scene and said they recovered a firearm. In addition to three counts of aggravated assault, authorities charged her with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, third-degree cruelty to children and carrying a weapon within a school safety zone, at a school function or on transportation furnished by a school. Authorities have not publicly explained the specific circumstances underlying the child cruelty allegation.
The charges describe allegations and do not establish guilt. Investigators have not announced a motive beyond the confrontation they said preceded the shooting, and authorities have not released a detailed account explaining whether each wounded person was directly involved in the dispute. The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active.
Deputies were called to the Laney High School property at about 6:05 p.m. Oct. 17, after the school’s homecoming football game against T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School. The shooting occurred in the parking and tailgate area at 1339 Laney Walker Blvd. The school system said its student-athletes, cheerleaders, band members and other students taking part in homecoming activities were safe and accounted for.
A Richmond County School System police officer was injured while responding to a separate altercation during the law enforcement response, according to the district. The officer was reported to be doing well. School officials did not release details about the separate confrontation or identify the officer.
Laney’s homecoming events had been moved to Oct. 17 after severe weather concerns prompted the school to reschedule activities originally planned for the previous weekend. District officials said they were continuing to work with law enforcement after the shooting.
No additional arrests connected to the three shootings had been announced in the reports reviewed Monday. The Sheriff’s Office said its investigation was continuing, with additional information expected if new findings become available.
