A regional SWAT team surrounded the Jean Street residence before officers found the 22-year-old suspect concealed in a bedroom closet.
SEAGOVILLE, Texas — Residents rushed out of their home after a man fleeing police entered the property, setting off a six-hour standoff that ended when officers found him hiding inside a box in a bedroom closet, authorities said.
The confrontation unfolded July 28 in the 500 block of Jean Street after a police pursuit that began with a reported hit-and-run crash. Seagoville police identified the man arrested at the home as 22-year-old Quinton Patterson. He faces several allegations related to the pursuit, the entry into the residence and a firearm later found in a vehicle.
Police said Patterson did not live at the Jean Street house. The residents told investigators that he had been there several times before, indicating that he was known to them. Authorities did not describe his relationship with the residents or say whether anyone was inside the home with him after the occupants escaped.
The residents left in a panic when Patterson entered, police said. No injuries inside the residence were reported in the information released by authorities. Police also did not report that the residents were held against their will or that Patterson threatened them.
Officers surrounded the property and established a perimeter intended to prevent Patterson from escaping. The Southwest Regional SWAT Team joined the response as the situation continued into the night. Nearby resident Mychel Vaughn told FOX 4 that she saw officers from several departments arrive as sirens filled a neighborhood where such activity was unusual.
Vaughn said she was concerned about both the man inside the residence and the officers responding to the scene. She said the situation could have been avoided and that fleeing had likely exposed the suspect to more criminal charges.
After about six hours, officers located Patterson inside the home. Police said he had concealed himself in a box placed in a bedroom closet. Authorities did not release additional details about how officers entered the residence or whether Patterson surrendered before he was taken into custody.
The standoff followed a series of events that began at about 6 p.m. in the 200 block of Hall Road. A caller reported that a black Dodge Charger had struck the caller’s vehicle and left the crash site. The caller then saw the Charger at a gas station across from the location of the collision, police said.
When officers approached the driver, police said Patterson fled in the Charger and entered U.S. Highway 175. Authorities said the car reached speeds of up to 116 mph in a 70-mph zone, moved through traffic and struck other vehicles before leaving the highway. Police did not provide information about possible injuries from those collisions.
Investigators later reported finding a firearm with a 30-round magazine inside the Charger. Police did not allege in the released account that the gun was fired or displayed during the pursuit or standoff.
Patterson was charged with offenses including criminal trespass, evading arrest and unlawful carrying of a weapon, police said. He also had three active warrants involving motor vehicle violations in Mesquite. Authorities had not released further information about bond, a court appearance or additional allegations as of Thursday.
