Highland Park Shooting Suspect Remains in Segregated Jail Unit for Violating Rules, Faces Additional Two Months

Waukegan, IL – The suspect in the 2022 mass shooting at Highland Park’s Independence Day parade is facing additional time in a segregated jail unit after violating jail rules, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli. The suspect, Robert Crimo III, used another inmate’s PIN number to make a telephone call to his mother after his telephone privileges had been suspended, Covelli confirmed on Sunday.

This violation has led to Crimo being placed in the jail’s administrative segregation unit, where detainees are assigned to single cells. He is expected to return to a normal cell block on March 3, unless he faces further disciplinary issues. This comes after Crimo had previously been placed in the segregation unit for threatening corrections officers, and he was scheduled to be released from the unit on January 4.

The 23-year-old suspect is facing 21 counts of first-degree murder and dozens of other charges related to the shooting that took the lives of seven people and injured 48 others at the 2022 Independence Day parade in Highland Park.

Crimo’s continued stay in the segregated jail unit is a result of his violation of jail rules, adding to the legal process as he awaits trial for the mass shooting. The authorities are taking the necessary precautions to ensure public safety and prevent any further disruptions from the suspect. The decision to extend his time in the segregated unit reflects the seriousness of the charges he is facing and the need to maintain order within the jail.

The suspect’s actions have resulted in him spending additional time in a segregated unit at the Lake County jail, where he awaits trial for the mass shooting. He faces serious charges and is expected to remain in the segregated unit until March 3, unless further disciplinary issues arise. The authorities are prioritizing public safety and orderly conduct within the jail facility.
