The surviving worker is stable and cooperating as deputies determine how a mistaken appliance delivery ended in gunfire and stabbing.
MERIDIAN, Okla. — Logan County investigators are working to determine who initiated a deadly confrontation between two appliance delivery coworkers after a complicated sequence involving a wrong address, an unusual encounter with juveniles and a fight involving a gun and knife.
William Conway III, 25, was shot and pronounced dead Monday, Oct. 5, after the confrontation northwest of Meridian, according to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. His coworker, 28-year-old Marquelle McCray, suffered stab wounds and injuries after being struck or run over by the delivery truck. Undersheriff Troy Dykes said Tuesday that McCray was stable and fully cooperating with investigators.
The central unanswered question is how the dispute between the two coworkers turned violent and which actions came first. Investigators have confirmed that both a firearm and a knife were used, but authorities had not publicly concluded who first used a weapon or who started the physical confrontation. The Sheriff’s Office has also been gathering witness accounts and evidence from the roadway and delivery vehicle.
Dykes said the men began their workday together after picking up appliances and were assigned to make deliveries in the same truck. They later arrived at the wrong home with a stove. A resident told emergency dispatchers that one of the workers became angry after being informed that the delivery was not theirs.
Authorities said the situation took another unusual turn when one of the workers entered a car carrying four juveniles on their way to school. The juveniles initially drove with him before realizing he was not supposed to be in their vehicle, then returned him to the delivery truck. No one in the car was reported injured.
The two delivery workers left the area together, but witnesses later reported seeing a fight near the truck. Investigators believe part of the dispute may also have occurred inside the vehicle. Conway suffered a fatal gunshot wound. McCray suffered multiple injuries, including stab wounds, an ear injury and injuries associated with being struck or run over by the truck.
Emergency crews were called shortly before 8 a.m. to the 11000 block of East College Avenue near Autumn Woods Farm Road. McCray was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Conway was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said no one else was injured.
Recordings of calls to 911 provide witness descriptions of the episode but do not settle the key investigative questions. One caller contacted dispatchers after the initial wrong-address encounter and called again about 15 minutes later after the confrontation had become deadly. Statements made during emergency calls are among the information investigators are reviewing, but authorities have not adopted every caller’s description as an established finding.
Dykes said investigators have found no indication that the episode involved a robbery or another separate crime that would explain the encounter. The trucking company has been cooperating with authorities, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators were continuing to collect evidence and interview people involved before deciding whether the surviving worker could face charges or whether the evidence supports another conclusion.
No final account of the confrontation had been released as of Wednesday. Authorities said the investigation remains active, with the sequence of the shooting, stabbing and vehicle-related injuries among the major questions still being examined.
