Police said five to 10 suspects fled after gunfire near Chatsworth Street.
LOS ANGELES — A 20-year-old man was hospitalized Friday evening after a group approached a parked car and opened fire at a Granada Hills apartment complex, Los Angeles police said.
The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. in the 16700 block of Chatsworth Street, near the Granada Gardens apartment complex. Police said the victim was inside a vehicle with two adult siblings when the group came up to the car. The case remained under investigation Saturday as officers searched for the suspects and reviewed surveillance video from the complex.
Investigators said five to 10 people were being sought after the shooting. Police described the suspects as young Black men and said they ran from the area after the gunfire. The victim was struck while sitting in the car and was taken to a hospital. Police first said his injuries were life-threatening, while ABC7 later reported he was expected to survive.
The victim’s brother, who said he was sitting next to him when the shooting began, told ABC7 that the attack did not appear random. “They were waiting as we parked,” he said, adding that people were already sitting on benches near the complex. He said his brother had received threats for weeks, though police had not confirmed a motive. Investigators said the shooting could be gang-related.
After the shots were fired, the wounded man drove forward and crashed into a nearby tree, according to his brother. The brother said the crash left him bleeding and injured, including pain that he believed could be from a fractured arm. He said he stayed at the scene because he wanted to tell police what he saw. He told ABC7 that more than eight rounds were fired.
Neighbors described a frightening scene at the apartment complex as police, firefighters and paramedics arrived. A resident identified as Norma told ABC7 in Spanish that she had gone to do laundry and saw a group nearby before the shooting. She said she heard six or seven shots and believed they were aimed at the victim.
The shooting also raised concerns among residents about security at the complex. Norma said the apartment complex had banned personal security cameras, including Ring doorbells, about two months earlier. ABC7 reported that surveillance video controlled by the complex had been turned over to police. It was not immediately clear Saturday what the video showed.
No arrests had been announced by Saturday. Police continued searching for the group involved and had not released the victim’s name. The next step in the case is the identification of the suspects and a fuller review of witness statements and surveillance footage.
