Gunman Opens Fire at Fort Worth Park Event, Injuring Child and Officer

Police said a shooter fired toward a gathering before running toward nearby apartments.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A Saturday night community gathering at Historic Stop Six Park ended in gunfire when a person dressed in black shot toward the crowd, injuring four people, police said.

The shooting was reported about 9:10 p.m. at the park in the 5200 block of East Rosedale Street. The victims included a woman critically wounded in the head, a child grazed in the head, an older woman shot in the hip and an officer struck by shrapnel.

Police said the shooter came from the area between an apartment complex and a nearby business before firing toward people at the park. The person then ran from the scene toward the apartments. Officers searched the area, but police said the shooter had not been located.

The child was taken to a hospital with injuries police described as not life-threatening. The older woman went to a hospital without an ambulance and was also expected to survive. The woman shot in the head remained the most seriously injured victim, police said.

The officer was inside a patrol vehicle near the event when a bullet went through the windshield. Police said shrapnel struck the officer, who had been parked along the street in the direction of the gunfire. Officials did not identify the officer.

The event was held in the Stop Six area, a historic southeast Fort Worth neighborhood. Police said officers were already nearby when the shooting happened. The gunfire brought a large emergency response to East Rosedale Street as investigators worked around the park and nearby businesses.

Authorities had not said Sunday whether the shooting was connected to anyone at the gathering or whether the victims were targeted. Police also had not released the suspect’s name, age or any possible motive.

The case remained open Sunday. Fort Worth police asked anyone who saw the shooting, recorded video or knew the shooter’s identity to contact investigators as the department continued searching for the suspect.
