BARRETT, TX – Residents of Zen Drive in Barrett are expressing concerns over the rising crime rate in their neighborhood. Maria Rodriguez, a long-time resident, says she regularly hears gunshots, especially on weekends, and fears for her safety. Over the past 21 years, she claims this is the fifth time a fatal incident has occurred nearby.
On Sunday, Harris County Sheriff’s deputies cordoned off a section of Zen Drive with crime scene tape after discovering a white male, approximately 25 years old, deceased in a driveway. The investigation is still in its early stages, and authorities have not yet identified the victim or any suspects.
“We are working diligently to gather information,” stated a deputy. “The victim does not appear to reside at the location, and we are coordinating with the property owner to piece together what happened.”
The victim, found with multiple gunshot wounds, was lying in a driveway shared by two residences. Neighbors reported seeing several vehicles fleeing the scene, but it remains unclear whether the victim arrived by car or on foot.
Rodriguez noted that the area often sees traffic and young people congregating, leading her to anticipate that trouble might arise eventually. She and other residents are hopeful that the perpetrators will be apprehended and that peace will return to their street.
“I’ve never felt entirely safe here,” Rodriguez admitted. “But it’s the best place I’ve found to raise my kids.”
In a potential breakthrough, deputies took a man into custody for questioning shortly after arriving at the scene. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to bring closure to a community eager for safety and stability.
