Gaza Human Rights Watch: Urgent International Investigation Needed for Field Executions and Torture by Israeli Forces

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – The Israeli military has been accused of committing “horrific crimes” against civilians in Gaza, prompting a call for an urgent international investigation by a human rights group. The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has collected accounts from Palestinians detailing field executions, torture, and threats of rape by Israeli ground forces in Gaza. This includes reports from Palestinians who were arrested, stripped naked, and attacked with machine guns, electric cables, and cold water.

In one instance, a 16-year-old boy recounted how his family’s home was stormed by Israeli forces, resulting in the deaths of several neighbors who tried to leave. The boy’s family was subjected to violent assaults and his mother and sisters were captured and kidnapped. Testimonies collected by the Euro-Med Monitor also included accounts of field executions witnessed by unarmed civilians.

The Israeli military has reportedly suffered significant losses, including failed attempts to rescue an Israeli captive which resulted in the man’s death. Palestinian resistance fighters have been credited with destroying or damaging 180 Israeli military vehicles in the days following a temporary truce. Amidst the fighting, the majority of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million has been displaced from their homes and many are facing starvation due to a complete siege.

The UN Secretary-General has raised concerns about the unfolding catastrophe in Gaza, warning of a potential breakdown of public order and the spread of epidemic diseases. In light of the ongoing violence, the US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, ensuring the continuation of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Meanwhile, humanitarian aid is being used as a cover for the ongoing conflict, with reports of malnourishment and shortages of essential supplies contributing to civilian suffering. Amidst the dire situation, questions have been raised about the use of aid as a strategic tool in foreign policy and diplomatic competition, rather than a means of alleviating civilian hardship.

As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, the international community faces mounting pressure to address the humanitarian crisis and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict. With the ongoing loss of civilian lives and the displacement of millions, the need for immediate action in Gaza has never been more urgent.
