Fugitive Wanted for Armed Robbery of Brooklyn Bishop Killed by Law Enforcement in New Jersey Shootout

South Brunswick, New Jersey – Law enforcement officers fatally shot and killed Shamar Leggette on Wednesday, a man wanted in connection with the robbery of a Brooklyn bishop. According to sources, Leggette was with his girlfriend and was compared to the infamous criminal duo, Bonnie and Clyde. Allegedly, the couple was wanted for crimes in multiple states.

United States Marshals confirmed that they shot and killed Leggette. The robbery victim, Bishop Lamor Whitehead, addressed the deadly shooting on Instagram, identifying Leggette as the individual who had previously assaulted him, his wife, and his 8-month-old daughter. This robbery had taken place during a sermon and was livestreamed, resulting in the theft of nearly $1 million worth of jewelry.

Leggette and two other suspects had committed the robbery in July of 2022 at Leader’s of Tomorrow International Ministry in Brooklyn while the bishop was preaching. While the other two suspects were arrested and charged in September of the same year, Leggette had remained on the run.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office reported that U.S. Marshals and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were attempting to execute an arrest warrant for Leggette’s multiple felony offenses when the 41-year-old opened fire at MHO Inn and Suites in South Brunswick, causing officers to return fire and ultimately kill him. Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during the shootout.

Additionally, it was mentioned that authorities recovered two firearms near the suspect, and although Leggette was killed, his girlfriend surrendered without incident. Bishop Whitehead expressed forgiveness for Leggette, indicating that he had previously forgiven him and had experienced feelings of anger. Moreover, he extended his condolences to the Leggette family.

The incident has brought an end to the search for Leggette, marking a resolution to the pursuit of justice for the crimes he allegedly committed.
